Department of English Language and Literature

About

Back to the Slovak-language site >>

What defines us is not that our classes are in English but that they are about English -- where "English" refers to a set of linguistic and cultural patterns. This means that you have to have a high level of proficiency in English to be able to follow us, and you have to be interested in this set of linguistic and cultural patterns called "English".

The Department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts and Letters, Catholic University in Ruzomberok, offers bachelor (BA) and master (MA) degree programmes for students of teacher training (English language and literature in combination with another subject) and for students of English philology and culture (English and American studies – a single-major study programme, and English and American studies in combination with German language and literature, history, philosophy, political science or Slovak language and literature as a double-major study programme). The department study programmes cover a large area of subjects in linguistics, literature, culture and methodology, where students can gain knowledge in an interactive way, and cultivate their critical thinking and skills necessary in articulating and defending their opinions in English.

Bachelor studies graduates can find careers in fields such as project coordination, tourism, Slovak and foreign mass media, non-governmental and civic organisations, cultural institutions and public relations. Master studies graduates can enter teaching professions, translation, project coordination, tourism, Slovak and foreign media, human resources, non-governmental and civic organisations, cultural institutions, public relations, administration, diplomacy.

Please note that the language of instruction in our programmes is English: all classes are taught in English, and students are, from their very entry, expected to have a level of English sufficient to participate and be successful in the learning process. The required entry-level proficiency is at least B2, but ideally C1.  See CEFR level groups here.
